Hand Tailored Suits in Hoi An: Bao Diep Tailor

Apr 10, 2023 | Guide, Vietnam

Hoi An is famous for its hand tailored suits, which you can get in good quality for extremely cheap. However, it can be hard to find a good tailor shop because there are so many all over the old city, and people will constantly approach you trying to get you to visit their shops. This is my guide for getting hand tailored suits in Hoi An.

CHOOSING A SHOP

When choosing a shop here, it is best to go off a recommendation from people who have already purchased from the shop. It takes several days as you go back for adjustments, so finding a good shop with great tailors will make or break your experience. We highly recommend Bao Diep Tailor, which a friend had recommended to us. They are a legit—and very popular—shop, with suits ranging from $80-500 USD depending on the fabric (I got mine for $120). Their tailors were incredibly helpful over the several days we went back for adjustments—even taking my girlfriend to the actual seamstress to get the details for her jumpsuit exactly how she wanted them. You can find the location here.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE

I got a suit, and I went back three times over two days for adjustments. My girlfriend Kenzie got a jumpsuit/dress, and she went back four to five times over three days for adjustments. The tailors were really flexible with scheduling and were able to fit us in to get all our adjustments in the limited time we were there.

OUR EXPERIENCE

The whole experience was so much fun. First, we both sat down with different tailor-ladies, where we determined what we wanted to be made. My lady asked me how much I wanted to spend on my suit, and when I replied with between $80 and $120, she showed me a range of fabrics I could choose from. I opted for a navy two-piece suit that would cost $120.

Next, I took off my shirt, and my measurements were taken. My tailor went around my whole body with her tape measure, getting all kinds of different measurements. Once these were taken, I was finished for the day and was told to return tomorrow to try on the suit. Kenzie’s tailor did the same for her.

Over the next three days, we returned for various adjustments; mine was done after just three visits, but Kenzie’s took longer because she was more particular with the details. Kenzie and her tailor went over the adjustments with the seamstress on the phone, and her tailor even ended up taking her on a motorbike ride to talk to the seamstress in person as the jumpsuit was adjusted right in front of her. I just chilled in the shop (which had air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and complimentary bottled water!) and read a book as all this was happening. Here are photos and videos of the process and the final products.

Best Things to Do in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
